Maldives, also known as the Republic of Maldives, is a state in South Asia that is located in the Indian Ocean. 26 atolls in the Maldives form a chain that crosses the equator. The total land area of all the islands in the Maldives is 298 square kilometers. It is the smallest nation in Asia and, with 557,751 people, it has Asia's second-lowest population.

The Dheyvis were the first inhabitants of the Maldives. They were from India's Kalibanga. Maldivian society retains a strong underpinning layer of Dravidian and North Indian cultures. The original Sinhalese immigrants to North India came from Sri Lanka. Tamil and Malabar seafarers settled the Islands as a result of the maritime traditions of the Malabar and Pandya people. Under a contract signed with the United Kingdom, the Maldives attained independence on July 26, 1965. Maldivians voted to end the sultanate and establish a republic in a national referendum in March 1968.

The Maldives has also absorbed influences from Arabia into its language and culture since the 12th century A.D. Maldivians are talented at lacquer and wood carving. The women weave gorgeous mats with intricate designs out of dyed and woven reeds.

Dhivehi, an Indo-Iranian Sanskritic language, is the official tongue of the Maldives. The Maldives' influence and culture reflect this language. Sinhalese and other Indian languages have a kinship with Dhivehi. Written from right to left like Arab languages, the language uses the Thaana script. the local name for the Maldivians' population, Dhivehin, derives from the Indian word "deevi," which means "island."

The North Malé Atoll, the largest city and the most visited location among the top Maldives tourist attractions, is located between latitudes 1°S and 8°N and longitudes 72° and 74°E. The Maldives' top tourist destinations include it. It was formerly known as Mahal because it served as the royal dynasties' residence, but it is now known as Kings Island.
