Sverdlovsk Oblast is a Russian federal subject located in the Ural Federal District. It is Russia's fourth most populous federal subject, with the capital city of Yekaterinburg. The oblast is a key economic centre, including mining, manufacturing, and agriculture businesses. It is also a major tourist destination, featuring numerous historical and cultural sites.


History


Sverdlovsk Oblast's area has been inhabited for about 40,000 years. The oblast was founded in 1934, after the first Russian settlements appeared in the 16th century. Sverdlovsk Oblast was crucial in the Soviet Union's industrialization. It has abundant iron ore, coal, and other mineral resources. The oblast is also a major heavy industry centre, with machine building, metallurgy, and aircraft manufacture.During WWII, Sverdlovsk Oblast was a major location for the manufacture of military equipment. It also housed a number of evacuation shelters for persons fleeing conflict zones. Sverdlovsk Oblast continued to flourish as a significant industrial hub after the war. It also became a scientific and educational centre.


Culture


Sverdlovsk Oblast's culture is a rich and diversified blend of influences from its many ethnic groups, which include Russians, Tatars, Bashkirs, and Mansi. The region is noted for its strong folk music, dancing, and arts and crafts traditions.

The Ural State Philharmonic Orchestra, the Yekaterinburg Opera and Ballet Theatre, and the Sverdlovsk Regional Art Museum are also located in Sverdlovsk Oblast. The Ural Music Festival and the Rocky Mountains Music Festival are two of the region's annual cultural festivals.


Language


Russian is the official language of Sverdlovsk Oblast. Mansi, Tatar, Bashkir, and Ukrainian are among the minority languages. These languages are legally protected, and schools and media outlets in the region support them.


Geography


Sverdlovsk Oblast is located in Russia's Middle Urals area. It is bounded to the north by Perm Krai, to the east by Tyumen Oblast, to the south by Kurgan Oblast and Chelyabinsk Oblast, and to the west by Bashkortostan. The oblast has a population of about 4 million people and an area of 194,800 square kilometres.

Sverdlovsk Oblast's landscape is diversified, with mountains, forests, plains, and rivers. The Ural Mountains cut through the oblast's centre, splitting it into two sections: the western part is part of the European Plain, and the eastern part is part of the West Siberian Plain. Mount Chertova Polyana, at 1,678 metres, is the highest point in the oblast.
