The Republic of San Marino, or San Marino, is an enclave of Italy in Southern Europe and the fifth-smallest nation in the world. San Marino is situated on the northeastern side of the Apennine Mountains. The land area is just over 61 km2. Tourism dominates the microstate's economy. Important sources of income are postage stamps and coins. They are highly prized by collectors.

The largest community in the nation is Dogana, which is part of Serravalle's largest municipality, and the capital city of San Marino is also San Marino. San Marino has a market economy with a strong emphasis on sectors like tourism, banking, textiles, and wine. More than half of the country's GDP is from the manufacturing and financial sectors combined.

History

When Napoleon invaded Italy, he respected the republic's independence and even made an offer to expand its borders. Its independence was also acknowledged by the Congress of Vienna after the Napoleonic Wars. Revolutionaries, including Giuseppe Garibaldi, were granted asylum in San Marino during the 19th-century movement for Italian unification. Several treaties after Italy became a national state ratified San Marino's independence. San Marino remained neutral throughout the Second World War, but in 1944 a British bombing raid fell on it, and later that year it was briefly occupied by both the Germans and the Allies. The Sammarinese Communist Party and the Sammarinese Socialist Party worked together to form the first democratically elected communist government in history, which was in power from 1945 to 1957.

Culture

Even though San Marino's cuisine, particularly that of the neighboring Emilia-Romagna and Marche regions, is very similar to Italian cuisine, it also has several distinctive dishes and goods of its own. The Torta Tre Monti, a wafer-layered cake decorated with chocolate to resemble San Marino's Three Towers, is likely its most well-known creation. The nation has a lengthy and extensive musical history that is closely related to Italian tradition but also largely independent in its own right.

Language

Italian is the official language. However, San Marino residents spoke a different dialect in everyday life for several decades, regardless of their social standing. Sammarinese is the native language of about 83% of the populace. The dialect of Emiliano-Romagnolo spoken in areas outside of Italy is thought to be the source of the language.

Geography
