Tokelau, a dependent territory of New Zealand in the southern Pacific Ocean, was formerly known as the Union Islands and, up until 1976, officially as the Tokelau Islands. Atafu, Nukunonu, and Fakaofo are the three tropical coral atolls in the group. The total area of their land is 10 km2. Tokelau is 2,400 miles southwest of Hawaii and 300 miles north of Samoa.

Each atoll has its administrative center in Tokelau, which lacks a central capital. The only country in the world with a 100% solar-powered economy is Tokelau, which also has the world's smallest economy overall. Both the government of New Zealand and the government of Tokelau refer to the territory as a nation.

History:

The atolls of Tokelau were inhabited by people from Samoa about 1,000 years ago, and they may have served as a gateway into Eastern Polynesia, according to archaeological evidence. In 1877, Tokelau was granted British protectorate status, which was formally recognized in 1889. Britain transferred control of Tokelau to New Zealand in 1926. Tokelau has never had a residential administrative presence, so the administration has been "light-handed" and has only had a minor impact on daily life on the atolls. The Tokelau Act of 1948 gave New Zealand official sovereignty over the territory. On January 1, 1949, Tokelau was officially proclaimed to be a part of New Zealand. Tokelau has advanced toward its current high level of political self-reliance over the past three decades. It has its distinct political institutions, such as an Executive Council and National Legislature.

Culture:

Due to its geographic isolation, Tokelau has largely maintained its traditional way of life and community. The Tokelauan Way is referred to as Faka Tokelau. Families are very close-knit, and there is a system of sharing and a responsibility to look out for and help all family members. The Fatele is a popular dance style that is performed at important occasions and community gatherings. The Fatele is performed in a group, with the first stanza being repeated at a higher pitch and faster tempo.

Language:

English and Tokelauan are the two official languages of Tokelau. Just under 60% of people in Tokelau speak English, and over 90% speak Tokelauan. There are dialect differences between the three atolls, and Tokelauan, a language related to Tuvaluan and Samoan, is spoken there. Despite Samoan being taught in schools, some Tokelauans also speak Tokelauan.

Geography:

Tokelau is a group of three atolls located in the South Pacific between the latitudes of 8° and 10° S and the longitudes of 171° and 173° W, roughly halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand. The villages are located on the numerous coral islands that make up the atolls. Swains Island is the fourth island that makes up the Tokelau Islands in terms of geography, history, and culture, but not in terms of politics.
