Education in Chandigarh

The Department of Education of Chandigarh supervises the functioning of the four government colleges in the union territory. The four colleges have spacious campuses, superlative infrastructure, sprawling grounds, latest laboratories and equipment and auditoriums. These colleges cater to the needs of students from not only Chandigarh but also S.A.S. Nagar and Panchkula. They have highly qualified faculty and dedicated staff and the libraries are well-stocked with books and journals. The four colleges also provide an array of academic and co-curricular activities.

All the government colleges are affiliated to Punjab University. These colleges conduct courses in all major educational streams - Arts, Commerce and Science. They have also courses in contemporary studies like Business Administration and Computer Science. Three of these colleges offer post-graduate courses in Information Technology, Economics, English, Public Administration, Commerce and Music - Instrumental, Vocal and Dance. Job-oriented subjects like Functional English and Sales Management are also taught. The colleges foster global competitiveness.

The Department of Education of Chandigarh has also established the Regional Institute of English, formerly called the Punjab Institute of English, for qualitative improvement in the teaching of English at the secondary level. It fulfills the English Language Teaching (ELT) needs of North India, primarily in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

Vocational education is a distinct stream running parallel to Arts, Commerce and Science mainstreams. There are 19 vocational courses offered in 23 government senior secondary schools. They are classified into four main divisions - Home Science, Health and Para-Medical, Engineering and Commerce.
