Assam is the gateway of Northeast India, so the necessity for improved transportation in the State is essential for development in the Northeast region. With an area of 78,550 km2, Assam is well connected by a network of national highways and other roads to important places within the state and other major cities in the country. Assam comprises of approximately 40342 km of road network including 2841 km of national highway.

Guwahati, the capital of Assam has good quality roads that are accessible and connected with major cities and towns in India. The National Highway Number 31, 37, 38, 40 and 52 links the state of Assam with other states and cities. The Union Ministry of Surface Road Transport and Highways has acknowledged two new roads connecting neighboring states of Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya as National Highways. They are National Highway Number 315A and 127B with total length of 99 km and 401 km respectively.

The Assam State Transport Corporation and other private operators run regular bus services in the state. The Tourism department has fleets of luxury buses and jeeps to provide transport for visitors and tourists. Taxis and shared taxis are also available to travel within the state.
