Assam Lok Sabha Elections 2014
A frontier province of India, Assam is located in the northeastern part of the country. In the North and the East, the state is bordered by Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh, respectively.
Towards the south lie Mizoram, Nagaland and Manipur. In the West of Assam, is Bangladesh and towards the southwest lies Bengal. A blend of diverse culture, Assam is an important state when it comes to national politics. For instance, with the Look East policy, Assam assumes great significance both at the state and the centre as a prominent northeastern state. It will soon be the passage to southeast Asian countries after the opening of the Stilwell Road that will connect India to China, opening the roads to trade.
Member Representation at the Centre
There is are 14 lok sabha seats in Assam to the Centre. The State Legislative Assembly of Assam is unicameral in nature and consists of 126 members.
Assam Elections History
If we look at the Assam Lok Sabha elections, the First Lok Sabha Election was held in Assam in 1951. The Indian National Congress was the winning party. The Congress party continued to be the winning party in 1957, 1962, 1967, 1971, 1977, and 1980 LS elections. In the 1985 elections, Asom Gana Parishad emerged as the winning party. In the Lok Sabha elections that followed in the years 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2009, the Indian National Congress continued to be the winning party, projecting a stronghold over the state.

The current government is led by the Indian National Congress in coalition with the All India United democratic Front (AIUDF). Tarun Gogoi is the Chief Minister.
