Dena Bank was founded in 1938 in Mumbai and is one of India's earliest banks. The bank was founded by the Devkaran Najee family under the name Devkaran Nanjee Banking Company Ltd. In December 1939 it took on its new name Dena Bank Ltd when it was incorporated as a Public Company. Dena Bank was nationalised in 1969 and dropped the "Ltd" in its name.
Dena Bank has been applauded for its unique initiatives such as:

- Credit Cards in rural India, known as "Dena Krishi Sakh Patra"
- Drive-in ATM at Juhu in Mumbai
- Smart Card at select branches in Mumbai

The Dena Bank head office is located in Mumbai and has a network of 1122 branches across the country and a network of 295 ATM's around India. Dena Bank launched core banking facility in March 2007 in its Mahim Branch in Mumbai.
