The Republic of Panama is a transcontinental nation that is bordered to the southeast by Colombia, to the west by Costa Rica, to the north by the Caribbean Sea, and to the south by the Pacific Ocean. It has a population of about 4.3 million, with Panama Metropolis serving as both the nation's capital and largest city.

The nation is well-known for its canal, a vital commercial route that joins the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. A substantial portion of Panama's economy is focused on the service industry, particularly the financial and tourism industries. Additionally, it has a vibrant culture that combines elements from the indigenous people, Africa, and Spain.

History

Panama had a varied history shaped by numerous significant events. For nearly 300 years, Panama remained under the rule of the Spanish Empire until its departure in 1821. After losing its independence, Panama merged with Colombia and tried unsuccessfully throughout the years to regain its independence. Finally, in 1903, Panama formally proclaimed its independence and signed a treaty with the US. The agreement gave the US the right to a certain area that was 50 miles long and 10 miles wide to build the Panama Canal, which it did in 1914. The canal connected the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and was a vital route for maritime trade. In 1999, the Panamanian government took over control of the canal from the US after nearly a century of US rule.

Culture

Panama culture is a blend of African, American Indian, North American, and Spanish influences that may be seen in Panama's traditional arts and crafts, music, religion, sports, and cuisine. It is recognised for its numerous festivals, and Latin American nations adore Panamanian music. The nation's Indian people, in particular, take great care to preserve other parts of traditional culture.

Language

The majority of people in Panama speak Spanish, which is the official language of the country. Many people who work internationally or for corporations are bilingual in English and Spanish. Native languages, mostly in their home territories, such as Ngäbere, are spoken all throughout the nation.

Geography

The Cordillera de Talamanca mountain range, which is close to Costa Rica's border, dominates the topography of Panama. The Volcán Bar, which is 3,475 m high, is the nation's highest point (11,400 ft). Panama claims a number of islands, notably the San Blas Islands, due to its two coastlines. This archipelago, which is made up of only 49 inhabited islands and cays, is located east of the canal off the Isthmus of Panama. Another archipelago that lies close to Costa Rica's border is Bocas del Toro, which is 32 kilometers (19.88 miles) away.
