The city lies on the northern fringes of the Aravalli Mountain range. From north to south, the district measures approximately 13 miles or 21 km and from east to west, the district measures 17 miles or 27 km. The number of people living in the district has grown to 1,514,085 (according to the census performed in 2011) from around 870,539 (as per the census conducted in 2001). The mean literacy rate of Gurgaon is 77%, which surpasses the countrywide mean of 65.38%. Literacy among males is 81%, and literacy among females is 73%. Approximately 13% of the people living in the city are below the age of six years.
