Gurgaon is an important city in the state of Haryana. It is also the second biggest city in the state and a major economic and academic hub in the state. It is a satellite city which forms a part of the NCR or National Capital Region. The district of Gurgaon is made up of five blocks and they are Pataudi, Badshahpur, Gurgaon, Sohna, and Farrukhnagar.

Area and population of Gurgaon



According to the census conducted in 2011, the population of the city of Gurgaon is 1,514,085. The total area of the Gurgaon district is 1253.07 sq km.

Economy of Gurgaon



In terms of per capita income in the country, Gurgaon occupies the third rank following Chandigarh and Mumbai. Gurgaon ranks as one of the biggest off shoring and outsourcing centers in the whole world. Apparel manufacturing, information technology, engineering and procurement, management consultancy, business advisory, insurance and brokerage, car manufacturing, real estate, and shopping malls are the major industries in the city.

Geographical features of Gurgaon



The city of Gurgaon shares its borders with Delhi and the district of Jhajjar in the north, Mewat district to the south, Faridabad district to the east, the state of Rajasthan and Rewari district to the west. The city lies on the northern fringes of the Aravalli Mountain range. From north to south, the district measures approximately 13 miles or 21 km and from east to west, the district measures 17 miles or 27 km. The Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary is a safe haven for the Indian Peafowl, Sarus Crane, Eurasian Wigeon and other varieties of Avifauna.

Demographic features of Gurgaon



The number of people living in the district has grown to 1,514,085 (according to the census performed in 2011) from around 870,539 (as per the census conducted in 2001). In the census conducted in 2001, about 54% of the people living in the district are males and 46% are females. The mean literacy rate of Gurgaon is 77%, which surpasses the countrywide mean of 65.38%. Literacy among males is 81%, and literacy among females is 73%. Approximately 13% of the people living in the city are below the age of six years.

It is a haven for indigenous avifauna like hoopoe, gray and black franklolins, drongo, indian roller, five types of larks, paddyfield pipit, purple sunbird, three species of egrets, lapwings, kingfishers, bushchats, indian courser, prinias, magpie and indian robins, shikra, black kites, oriental honey buzzard, marsh harrier, sarus crane, black shouldered kite, spotbilled duck, comb duck, night heron, cormorants, two varieties of parakeets and spotted owlet.

Migratory birds like the gaganey, teal, northern shoveller, brahminy duck and pintail are seen. Different varieties of ibis, storks and spoonbills are noticed in the park.

Migrant aquatic birds including plovers, sandpipers, green shank, black winged stilt, and red shanks also arrive at this sanctuary. The cuckoos, asian koel, bee eaters, and golden oriole arrive in the summer.
