Language of Jabalpur



Hindi is the predominating language of Jabalpur. It is the first language of Jabalpur, as well as of Madhya Pradesh. Hindi is the official language of India and therefore it occupies a significant position in Jabalpur.
It is spoken and understood by all the communities throughout the city. Jabalpur falls under the Hindi belt of India, which comprise of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Delhi and Haryana.

Besides Hindi, we also come across other languages in Jabalpur. The people of Jabalpur also speak Urdu, Marathi, English and many other languages. The Mughal emperors, who captured Jabalpur towards the end of the 16th century, brought Urdu to the city. The Urdu speakers occupy a considerable population of the city. Besides, the British rule in Jabalpur introduced English to the territory. The British rule fostered the growth of English language in Jabalpur. It is noteworthy that the population of Jabalpur comprises of various linguistic communities that exist in different pockets of the city.
