Famous for the industry of coal mining, this city is even regarded as the ?Coal Capital of India?. Apart from being the 42nd biggest city, this industrial city cum district of the state of Jharkhand is the 96th fastest developing city of the world.

The district has got around 112 coal mines. The coalfields of this area are called ?Jharia coalfields?. These coalfields are the sole source of metallurgical and coking coal in India. Besides these, the place has even got some tourist places, which attracts tourists from the nearby places. The district is featured with dry deciduous forests. Rivers like Damodar, Gobai, Irji, Jamunia, Katri and Khudia flow through the district. All of these contribute to the natural beauty of the region.

Best Time to visit

The city of Dhanbad is experiences hot summer temperatures, heavy rainfall and cold winters. Thus, if you are planning to visit this place, then the best time to do so is between the months of October and February.

Places to see in and around Dhanbad

Despite being a land of coal mines this city cum district of India has got numerous places of visit in and around it. The coal mines located within this district are worth visiting as well. Besides the underground and the opencast coal mines following are some of the major ones among them:
  • Bhatinda Waterfalls- Bordered by lush greenery this waterfall near Moonidih attracts tourists mainly during the winter season. The distance in between this waterfall and the Dhanbad Railway Station is around 14 km.

  • Bhuphor Mandir- This temple situated towards Govindpur on the National Highway ? 32 is just 6 km away from the district's main railway station.

  • Birsa Munda Park- Sprawling over an area of approximately 25 acre of land this is among the prime picnic spots of the land of coalfields. This place is positioned at a nearby distance of 8 km from the main railway station of this city cum district.

  • Chark Khurd- Positioned in Tundi this area is famous for the hot water spring.

  • Gopalpur- Based at Nirsa this region is visited by tourists to get a glimpse of the ancient architectural constructions which were built during the reign of the Emperor Ashoka. The place has even got a huge stone image of the Emperor.

  • agannath Temple- Situated at Dhansar around 1 km from the famous location of the Bank More this temple is dedicated to Lord Jagannath and is known for its car festival.

  • Kalyaneshwari Temple- Dedicated to Goddess Kalyaneshwari this temple is situated near Maithon.

  • Lillori Sthan Mandir- This is an age old place worship which is dedicated to Goddess Kali. Located on the river bank of the Katri River this temple is just 19 km away from the city's railway station.

  • Maithon- Spread over an area of about 65 sq km this place has got a lake which is featured with the facility of boating. A deer park as well as a bird sanctuary located within its proximity makes this place a favorable picnic spot.

  • Panchet Dam- Located at a distance of about 54 km from Dhanbad's railway station this is one of the most visited picnic spots near this Indian city.
  • Panra- Positioned near Nirsa this place is known for being the location of the Pandeshwar Mahadev Temple. As per the local belief this is the place where some time was spent by the Pandavas during their period of exile.

  • Shakti Mandir- Situated in the Dhanbad city this temple devoted to Goddess Durga is among the famous Hindu temples of the region. Devotees visit this temple all round the year.

  • Topchanchi Lake- Based at the Golden quadrilateral which is approximately 37 km from the railway station of the city this lake nestled within the forest and lush hills of Parasnath is one of the popular picnic spots of Dhanbad.
