Gir Forest National Park


Gir Forest National Park is one of the most popular excursions from Junagadh. This park is often visited by the tourists who come to the city of Junagadh. The park is an ideal place for the nature lovers.

Gir Forest National Park of Junagadh is situated in the southwestern region of Gujarat state. The total area of the Gir Forest National Park is 116 square miles.

Asiatic Lion



This park was established to protect the Asiatic lions. The Asiatic lion is smaller than the African lion. Its mane is also smaller. This animal is the main attraction of the Gir Forest National Park. This park has a big role to play in increasing the population of the Asiatic lion.

The best time to visit the Gir National Park is from November to June. The ideal way of observing the lions of the national park is to travel around the forest in a jeep.

A variety of wildlife can be viewed at the Gir Forest National Park in Junagadh. Other than lions, sambar deer, leopards, chital spotted deer, chowsingha four-horned antelopes, nilgai antelopes, gazelles, chinkaras, monkeys, wild boars, jackals, langurs and hyenas can be found in the Gir Forest national Park. Some of the birds that can be found in the park are bonneli's eagles, paradise flycatchers, woodpeckers, crested serpent eagles and flamingoes.

The Gir National Park at Junagadh has a mixed deciduous forest. The main trees that are found to grow in this forest are teak, banyan, flame of the forest and acacia. There is a vegetation belt near the major streams and rivers. The plants that are commonly found in this region are Karanj, Jambu, Umro, Kalam, Vad, Sirus, Charal and Amli.
