Silvassa, the capital of the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli is spread over 491 square kilometers, at an elevation of 32 meters on the western side of the foothills of the Western Ghats, close to Gujarat and Maharashtra.

The city is located at Latitude20°12’N and Longitude 73°00’E. The Daman Ganga River flows in the west of the city, draining into the Arabian Sea at Daman. The temperature in the city ranges from 38°C in summer to 11°C in winter. It gets a heavy rainfall of 2,500 mm annually.

The city has no major highway passing through but it has motorable roads connecting it to Vapi city (in Gujarat) which is on the route of the national highway no 8 connecting it to Delhi and Mumbai. Silvassa has no rail line or airport .The nearest rail link is also at Vapi, which is 18 kilometers away.

Silvassa is home of the Varli people and has a tribal population though recently it has developed into a major industrial area with a number of industries being set up here. Some of the industries and businesses of the city are

The city has a sizable forest cover with 53% of the area of the entire Union Territory under forest. This forest environment and the tribal culture of the city is a main tourist attraction and there are now many hotels, restaurants, and resorts in the city. Most of the resorts are located near the main road in the city, close to the river.

Silvassa was a former Portuguese Colony and traces of the Portuguese influence can be found in the old buildings in the city. The Police Headquarters and the Circuit House are in the center of the city. The Fire Station and the Secretariat are in the north of the city.
