Daman is located 193 km north of Mumbai and is on the coast of the southern boundary of Gujarat near north of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. It is a small district covering an area of 112 sq. km. The total population of the district is 1,58,059, comprising of 92,478 males and 65,581 females.
About 67% of the area of district is under cultivation. The crops grown are paddy, wheat, groundnut, pulses and beans, banana, sapota and mango. Most of the industries are located in Somnath, Dabhel, Bhimpore and Kadaiya.

The nearest railway station of Daman is Vapi, situated on the main railway line between Delhi and Mumbai. It is just 12 km away from Daman. Another nearest railway station is Valsad about 35 km far off from Daman. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Hihghway No. 8 connects Daman via Vapi. The nearest airport is Mumbai from where both domestic and international flights are available.
The literacy rate of the region is 81.09 % and a number of schools like Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, Government Secondary School (Girls), Government Higher Secondary Government Secondary School (Boys), Government Secondary School (Girls), Government Secondary School, Bhucharvada, Government Secondary School, Vanakbara, Home School, Nirmala Mata Secondary school and Institute Of Our Lady of Fatima Convent High School impart education to the people of Daman. But scope for higher education is poor as there are very few higher educational institutions.
