Se Cathedral


Se Cathedral is one of the most popular religious structures situated in the state of Goa. It is one of the most expansive churches in the entire Asian subcontinent. Almost 80 years were spent to construct this massive structure. The church was built in order to pay homage to the very revered figure, Catherine of Alexandria. This church is located in the ancient region of Goa, which was known to be the capital during the rule of the Portuguese colonizers. During the ancient times the church Se Cathedral represented the royalty of the kingdom of Goa. This magnificent monumental structure reflects an air of opulence and grandeur. Se Cathedral is known to be one of the most sacred institutions for the entire Christian community residing in Goa. It has been proclaimed to be a heritage site by the UNESCO.

Se Cathedral is an exquisite piece of art that has been built on a raised platform covered with lime plaster. It lies on the western side of the great square of Terreiro de Sabaio. The courtyard in front of the church is set about by a flight of staircase. The cathedral has been built in a Portuguese as well as Dutch style. The total length of the church is 250 feet and the breadth is 181 feet. The frontal region of the church is almost 115 feet high. The western face of the cathedral has been constructed in a Tuscan style having square towers. The interiors of the Se Cathedral Has been built in a Corinthian style characterized by very tall pillars. Se Cathedral church is known for its enigmatic art and architecture.
