Divided into six zones: North Zone, South Zone, East Zone, West Zone, Central Zone and North East Zone, India has 29 states and 7 Union Territories. The southern Indian Peninsula is almost entirely composed of the Deccan plateau, which has two hilly coastal ranges, the Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats.
