Its already the month of December and another year has passed so quickly. When we talk about December, what comes to mind is Christmas, the markets and homes would start to sport Christmas trees and lighting and its another reason to have more fun. Christmas is also known for its special food delicacies and in few articles this month we will talk about these delicacies from around the world. Gingerbread is one such delicious cake very famous in the US, England and the whole of Europe, in some specific countries people also make the hard form biscuits and cookies of Gingerbread. We will see another form of Christmas cookies later, however let’s see how to make a Gingerbread cake at home and make this Christmas season more special.

Ingredients needed for Gingerbread

(makes 1 loaf)

Unsalted butter (at room temperature) – 120 gms

Brown Sugar – 1 cup

Molasses – 1/2 cup

Eggs – 2

Vanilla extract – 2 tsp

Maida – 1 1/2 cup

Ground ginger – 1 tbsp

Ground cloves – 1 tsp

Ground cinnamon – 1 tsp

Salt – 1 tsp

Buttermilk – 1/2 cup

Baking soda – 1 tsp

Baking bread loaf pan (I used a 9 inch pan)

How to make Gingerbread

Preparation time: 15 min.

Cooking time: 1 hour

Pre-heat the oven to 180 C.

Grease the bread pan and keep aside.

Whisk the butter and sugar vigorously for about 5 min.

Add molasses and mix well.

Add eggs and mix well.

Add vanilla extract.

In a separate bowl mix maida, baking soda, ground ginger, ground cinnamon, ground cloves and salt.

Mix this mixture with the other mixture.

Add buttermilk and mix well.

Pour this mixture in the greased pan and spread evenly.

Put the pan in the pre-heated oven and set the timer to 45 min.

Take the pan out, remove the bread.

Dust with powdered sugar as a garnish.

Cut in slices of required size and serve.
