5. Carrots
The reddish-orange colour of the carrots we see today was not so in the beginning. These vegetables were originally white and purple. They also have thin roots towards the narrow end. The natural genetic mutation to the now-common colour took place around the late of 16th century, as scientists believe. Orange is the new black, indeed.
