Food is an integral part of our health and life. It is an essential component of our survival. We get nutrients and energy from food which also helps in our development and proper growth. Preservation of food is a global issue. In many poor countries a large number of people have to go to bed without food. In the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic people are dying amid hunger.

WFSD ensures sustainable development

Seeing the importance of food, the World Food Safety Day (WFSD) is celebrated worldwide on 7 June 2020. On this day two of the United Nations agencies, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) play a significant role in the creation of awareness among people. The purpose of this day is to pay attention to the prevention of foodborne disease, human health, economic prosperity, agriculture, and sustainable development.

Food safety, a responsibility of all

The theme of the 2020 World Food Safety Day is ‘Food Safety, Everyone’s Business”. Which reflects that food safety is the responsibility of all. As per the World Health Organisation (WHO), the action-oriented plan will help to promote global food safety awareness and also draw the attention of nations and decision-makers, the private sector, civil society, UN organizations, and the general public to come forward and pay attention to food safety and eradicate hunger from the world.

High rate of hunger death

It is estimated that about 9 million people die every year due to hunger or hunger-related diseases. One in nine people goes to bed without food. The entire world is passing through the COVID-19 pandemic where people are dying in large numbers amid lack of nourishment, correct data of hunger death is not being revealed by any country.

Aware each other for food safety

The World Food Safety Day 2020 is going to be celebrated at a time when the entire world including India is passing under the grip of COVID-19 pandemic. People have a chance to interact with each other through video conferences or mails. Everyone has the responsibility to transmit messages of the promotion of food safety. Currently, deaths due to lack of hunger have been intensifying in the period of novel coronavirus lockdown.

Food safety duty for all

  • The government should make a proper arrangement which can keep the food safe from pests and chemicals
  • The customers must be careful and try to check the quality and details of food before buying it.
  • Government officials and NGOs must keep eyes on the wasting of food and culprits should get punishment so that wastage of unnecessary food can be stopped.
  • Educated customers should educate people regarding the diseases and risks linked with food items, the effect of the use of chemicals on health and food wastage as well.


Every individual must play a significant role from farm to table to ensure that the food we consume is safe and will not affect our health. WHO has also stressed on the reduction of foodborne diseases worldwide to eradicate global hunger.
