The novel coronavirus pandemic has taken root across 185 countries, while the total number of COVID-19 cases in India stands at 11,349. The death toll from the deadly outbreak across the country has mounted to 377. Maharashtra, Delhi and Tamil Nadu are the worst-hit states accounting for the highest number of the reported cases.

Modi stresses on seven deeds

Prime Minister Narendra Modi as expected, has extended the lockdown period till May 3. However, Modi said that India gained from timely measures of social distancing and lockdown and is in a much stable position in comparison to several powerful countries of the world. If the situation improves then the Union government would think about some relaxations after April 20. PM Modi has urged the countrymen to do seven noble deeds.

Shah assures no lack of commodities

Home Minister Amit Shah assured everyone on Tuesday that there is no shortage of stock of food, medicines and other essential commodities. Hence, no need to worry due to the extension of lockdown. Meanwhile, Indian Railways has decided to suspend its passenger services till the shutdown. Domestic and international flights will also remain suspended.

WHO lauds India’s effort

 The World Health Organisation on Tuesday praised India’s timely action against the novel coronavirus outbreak. WHO’s South-East Asia Regional Director, Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh said, “Despite enormous and multiple challenges, India has been demonstrating unwavering commitment in its fight against the pandemic,” she said. “In these testing times, the action lies as much with the communities as with the authorities and the health workforce,” she said.

Maharashtra to set up a task force

Maharashtra is the worst-hit state in the country by the COVID-19 outbreak. Therefore, the state government has decided to form a task force of specialist doctors to recommend a patient management protocol for critically ill novel coronavirus patients in dedicated critical care hospitals.

Critical care hospitals in Maharashtra

The state government has set up a nine-member task force under the chairmanship of Dr Sanjay Oak. The task force will give suggestions to patient management protocol for seriously ill COVID-19 patients. The government has also selected some of the reputed hospitals such as Nanavati Hospital, Saifee, Saint George, Wockhardt, Balasaheb Thackeray Trauma Care Hospital and Seven Hills hospitals as critical care hospitals.

Sonia Gandhi assures help

Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday assured people that her party is ready to provide all kinds of help in the time of crisis. She urged the countrymen through a video message released by the party to stay at home and follow the lockdown strictly. With the support of everyone, India will be able to beat the novel coronavirus and emerge victorious soon.

OFB develops medical emergency items

Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) has developed some essential items which can be used in medical emergencies such as two-meter tents, screening, hospital triage along with quarantine facilities. Seeing the demand of sanitiser and masks OFB has been manufacturing hand sanitiser and face masks on a war footing. It has already supplied 70,000 litres sanitisers to different agencies. It has also set up two test facilities for blood penetration tests in two cities Chennai and Kanpur.
