Internet Of Things – New Devices for Remote and Sensory Applications

Internet of Things (IOT)

Internet of Things

The Internet of Things (IOT) acts as a bridge between the physical and cyber worlds. Though the internet is around for many years, the Internet of Things (IOT) is quite a new concept in the market with highly capable sensors which we get at a very low cost today. The technological improvement of wired and wireless communications and network protocol allow connecting sensors to the internet in a better way. Sensors and devices connect humans and things and the physical and cyber world.

Actually an IOT system allows you to plug in different devices which can be managed remotely. This can be very well explained with some suitable examples which can give a complete insight on the system.

  1. Today, we frequently come across a term called smart home. Now, what do we mean by smart home. Let us go into the deeper explanation of this. The front door of a house gets automatically unlocked by the remote control built into my key as I approach it and then the light of the drawing room gets turned on when the wireless radio of the front door messages the network. Actually IOT acts as coordination between several devices.
  2. Suppose you are on your way to the office for an urgent meeting and get stuck in a heavy traffic. Your car, which has an access to calendar, immediately sends a message to the other party that you will be late.

IOT devices and sensors, act as our eyes and ears about the day to day activities of the world which can record pressure, temperature, light, sound and motion.

Healthcare applications

It has been predicted that by 2020 IOT will generate revenue of $373 billion out of which $ 10 – 12 billion will be India’s contribution. There are many sectors in India which have been identified, where this new wave of innovation which is a collective game of software, hardware and telecom can be applied. The different sectors are industries, agriculture, transport, water supply networks, wellness and healthcare, transport and etc.

The Central Government has already planned to develop 100 smart cities across the country. IOT can reach a very strategic height even if it succeeds partially. In recent years we have observed that India has significant rise in lifestyle diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure. For preventive care and disease management IOT services can be very well leveraged with healthcare ecosystem which can be controlled remotely. Companies are coming up with different types of wearable devices to monitor vital stats, fitness tracking and individual safety.

There are some practical challenges while launching this sensor based services. As the number of devices, sensors and gateways are very large; it will be very tough to remotely manage these completely automated machines which are going to be placed over large geographical areas.

Innumerable stakeholders

There should be a proper integration of data as it will be available from various resources. Also these data should be stored, analyzed and ingested properly as there will be a scaling of users and devices. There should be proper data privacy as it will be personal and confidential as well as sensitive for which data should be protected from any unauthorized access.

As IOT functions in a complex ecosystem there will be innumerable number of stakeholders which can be a real challenge.

As the IOT sector in India has got a positive acceleration a number of other business opportunities are emerging which includes solutions for hardware products, local and global applications for IOT platforms. As conversations about the IOT are going on everywhere, we must understand about the changes that are going to take place in our lives as well. We should educate ourselves about the IOT and its potential impacts on our work and life as it is going to be a powerful driver in the growth sector.
