Who was Cyrus Mistry?

Cyrus Mistry was born into the Indian-Irish business family of Pallonji Mistry. He was the younger son of his father. At the same time, their mother's name was Patsy Perin Dubash. Mistry's mother was born and brought up in Ireland. Father Pallonji Mistry chose to marry a girl from Ireland and selected the citizenship of Ireland.

Cyrus Mistry was the former chairman of TATA Groups. He was born into an Indian Parsi business family. Recently, he was travelling from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, to Mumbai, Maharashtra, where he was said to have died along with a co-passenger who was a professional squash player. They both died in a car accident on September 4, 2022.

 The Early life of Cyrus Mistry

Cyrus had three more siblings. He had an elder brother, Shapoor Mistry, and two sisters, Laila and Aloo Mistry. It is said that all siblings of Cyrus were married. The elder brother is married to the daughter of a lawyer, Behroze Sethna. Shapoor also chose citizenship of Ireland. Furthermore, Laila is married to Rustom Jehangir, a London-based manager. While Aloo was married to Noel Tata, half-brother of Ratan Tata.

Cyrus did his schooling at the Cathedral and John Connon School, based in South Mumbai. Further, he graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering in the branch of Civil Engineering from Imperial College London. In 1996, he again completed his Masters’s in Management from the University of London.

 Cyrus Mistry’s Personal Life

Cyrus Mistry married the daughter of a lawyer, Iqbal Chagla, and Rohiqa Chagla. Cyrus and Rohiqa are blessed with two sons, Firoz Mistry and Zahan Mistry. The Mistry family has chosen to be Irish citizens and also permanent members of India.

He acquired “Overseas Citizenship of India”. According to the Irish newspaper, “The Independent,” Mistry considered himself a global citizen. His background, grandfather, and father were engaged in the business of TATA Groups. His grandfather, Shapoorji Mistry, acquired a stake in the TATA Groups. According to the latest report by ‘Businessinsider’, the Mistry family acquires 18.5% of the shares of the TATA Groups now.

At the age of 31 years, he joined his family business, established by his grandfather, “Shapoorji Pallonji Co. Ltd. He served in the position of chairperson of the Tata Group from 2012 to 2016. Apart from this position, he also established his own brand, “Cyrus Investments Pvt. Ltd.

 Cyrus Mistry and Controversies 

Cyrus Mistry became chairperson of the Tata Group in 2012. He retired in 2016. In 2016, the legal battle started between the Mistry family and the Tata Groups Pvt. Ltd. The issue was traced to India’s topmost court. The hearing resulted in a decision favouring Tata Groups Pvt. Ltd.

The controversy began when the Mistry group filed a lawsuit against the Tata groups for mismanagement and oppression. The Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) rejected all the allegations.

The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) stepped in and spoke in favour of Cyrus Mistry. Further, the legal case between Cyrus Mistry and Tata Sons was left to the two parties.

 How did Cyrus Mistry die? 

Cyrus Mistry was travelling from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, to Mumbai, Maharashtra. He was with his co-passenger when he died due to an accident. It is said that both the people were not wearing helmets. His car was crushed near a bridge over the Surya river.
