Mirzapur: An Engaging Watch

Mirzapur review

'Mirzapur' in Amazon Prime - Review

Mirzapur, India’s original series that is now streaming on Amazon Prime, is basically a show set in Uttar Pradesh. It is based on the sagas of a place with the same name. Created by Karan Anshuman and Puneet Krishna, the story of Mirzapur encircles crime, action, and thrill at every turn. The show unfolds various practices prevalent in Eastern UP which the world wasn’t aware of. The grizzly bloodbath, betrayal and also unhinged violence picturised in the show is the magnum opus of it which is why it is extremely popular amongst the youth. Mirzapur is one such show that has changed the trajectory of the growth of Indian showbiz.

The setup of Mirzapur is similar to that of Sacred Games (a Netflix Original) and Anurag Kashyap’s “crime-esque universe” Gangs of Wasseypur. But, the unique element in Mirzapur is the focus of makers on depicting real-life politics, law enforcement, business and adultery which makes it an engaging watch.

Akhandanand Tripathi (Akhanda or Kaleen Bhaiya) is a millionaire carpet exporter based in Mirzapur, a city in eastern Uttar Pradesh. He is not only an exporter but also a mafia don. The Tripathi clan has been ruling the lawless belt of Purvanchal since the generation of Satyanand Tripathi, the father of Akhandanand who took the reign twenty years back in a bloody uprising. Akhanda has one son named “Munna” who is a power-hungry heir and can go till any limit to inherit the empire as soon as possible. The twist in the tale arises when Guddu and Bablu, the sons of a righteous and honest lawyer meet Akhandanand Tripathi and collaborate with the Tripathis in their business.

Guddu is a kind of guy who appreciates the power of Munna and Akhandanand and wants to be like them while Bablu is a nerd who wants to become an IAS officer. Due to a push which comes to shove, the brothers join Akhanda, fight crusades from all gangsters and spread his business of illegal opium and gun trading.

Politicians, lawyers, and mafias remain entangled in this complex web of rivalries and power throughout the show and try to accomplish the goal of utter dominance.

Mirzapur is getting extremely popular because it has a remarkably catchy flow and an unparalleled steadfast narrative technique. As the dialogues are realistic, they are trending in social media memes. Mirzapur also depicts the complexity in the love and sex life of characters like never before which serves as another reason for its popularity. The show has an outstanding star cast consisting of Pankaj Tripathi, Divyendu Sharma, Ali Fazal, Vikrant Massey, Shweta Tripathi, Shriya Pilgaonkar, and Rasika Dugal who have acted really well throughout the complete series.

It is the violence (specifically in an everyday occurrence), the depiction of women, unconventional sex and liking for this genre which makes us concerned regarding the impact of shows like this on the audience they cater to. Rest, the show is amazing as it has a tight plot and no loopholes. In fact, in the end, the creators have decided to conclude the season with a jaw-dropping cliffhanger, leaving the audience restless for the new edition already. It seems then, that curiosity continues to be a beneficial factor for Mirzapur from the beginning till the very end.

It appears that the new-age Indian audience wants to explore this emerging genre of crime more. This explains why movies and shows like Mirzapur, Gangs of Wasseypur and Sacred Games are getting popular, with even the creators getting more experimental. The charm of these shows is so irresistible that even big Bollywood names like Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Kulbhushan Kharbanga and Shreya Pilgaonkar etc. can’t help but get swayed in the waves.

It will be exciting to see what more this genre can give us, especially when set in the Indian atmosphere we are used to. Well, Mirzapur Season 2 will definitely give us a sneak peek.
