Plot: The story revolves around Murad (Ranveer Singh) an underdog  and his struggles surrounding music, money, love and family. Alia Bhatt is portraying the character of Safeena, a medical student who is madly in love with Murad. She is a young, violent, unpredictable and crazy sort of a girl. Safeena has her own struggle of getting out of a stereotypical and conservative Muslim middle-class family. Later, MC Sher (Siddhant Chaturvedi), a selfless mentor finds the rough diamond Murad and does all in his power to help him with his journey. Murad’s father (Vijay Raaz) is ruthless and crafty. He is a poor driver who dwells in the slum with his two wives, kids and a mother. On his journey to the YouTube fame, Murad meets Sky (Kalki Koechlin). She is a free soul, who loves art, music and graffiti. Sky is studying music in the USA and is in India to do an assignment for which she collaborates with Murad and MC Sher. During all this she develops a huge crush on Murad, which in turn causes problem for him and Safeena. Later Murad struggles between his daily bread and his love for hip-hop.

Movie Performance & Review:

Ranveer Singh has outclassed himself yet again by giving a grand performance as Murad. Apart from his acting skills, he has showcased his excellent rapping skills as well. Ranveer will make you believe that he is the real Gully Boy and fall in love with him all over again. Alia Bhatt is outstanding as the medical student and has done full justice with her role as Safeena and has beautifully portrayed her struggles. Vijay Raaz can be seen at the top of his game as Murad’s father, who is a shrewd and narrow-minded father. There is this surprise package performance by Siddhant Chaturvedi as MC Sher. He has his own character depth shown as a part time DJ and a struggling rapper while bearing the tantrums of his alcoholic father. There are good yet hidden performances by Vijay Verma (Moeen) and Nakul Sahdev (Salman) as Murad’s go to buddies. They help him beg, borrow and steal. The shooting has been done in Dharavi and has quite the authenticity to it. There are a few shots which shed light on the poor and unhealthy living condition of Indian city slums. The original music score is out of the box and will have your head moving to its tunes. There are a few authentic rap battles from our good own local Mumbai hip-hop rap stars, which are to watch out for.

Our verdict: Do not miss this one. Gully boy will surely keep you at the edge of your seats. The movie is gripping and at the same time has some hidden yet hilarious puns. This one is a definite crowd puller. If you are a hip-hop rap fan it has all the punch that is required. It has all the ingredients of a good movie and hence is fit to be your Valentine weekend treat.
