Languages in Mysuru (Mysore)

The most commonly used languages in Mysore include Kannada, Tamil and English. Since many people from other states are also gathering here for work so Hindi language is also gaining importance and is now being used by a large section of the population. Kannada is the official language of the state.

Kannada language of Mysore is one among the most prominent among the Dravidian group of languages. The others being Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. It is almost as old as the Tamil language. The language has gone through modifications over the ages. Scholars classify Kannada of Karnataka into four types on the basis of time period. The earliest category is known as the Purva Halegannada, the modified language that was used between 10th and 12th century is known to be Halegannada. Nadugannada Kannada was used between the 12th and the 15th centuries. From them developed the Hosagannada that came to be used after the 15th century.
