Panaji-Government & Politics

Panaji-Government & Politics plays a pivotal role in the political and the administrative scenario of the capital city of Goa. In fact, the entire political and administrative affairs of Goa is operational from the capital city of Panaji or Panjim, as it is known today. After the state of Goa attained autonomy from the Portuguese colonizers and became a part of the Indian subcontinent, politics became a part and parcel of the lives of the Goan people.

The legislature of Goa is unicameral i.e. it is represented by a single house with 40 members. The Prime Minister spearheads the legislature and is the official executive head of the state. The governor is the ceremonial head of the state. The President of India appoints the governor who plays a monumental role when it comes to choosing the next government or the legislative assembly. In fact, the party with the majority votes during the elections or even a coalition government is in charge of the jurisdiction of Goa. The current Chief Minister of Goa is Shri. Digamber Kamat while Shri. S.C. Jamir is the Governor.

After nearly thirty years of peace and political stability the years spanning between 1990 to 2005 saw tremendous political unrest and upheaval in the state.
