Varkala Beaches

Janardhana Temple

Built sometime in 12th century, the Janardana Temple is another important tourist attraction in Varkala. From the cliff top where most of the hotels and restaurants are located, the temple is a short walk away. The original temple, a Vishnu shrine, was destroyed by the tidal waves. Many years past, when a Pandyan king did penance to Lord Brahma, was instructed to rebuild the temple. Non-hindus are not allowed to enter the inner sanctum sanctorum.

The headquarter of the Sree Narayana Dharma Sangham Trust, founded by Sree Narayana Guru is located just 3 km away from the Janardhana Temple.

Varkala Tunnel

No description of the tourist attractions in Varkala is complete without the mention of Varkala Tunnel. The 924ft tunnel took nearly 14years to complete in 19th century. The tunnel was used for ferrying several type of goods.

Edava Beach

Edava beach is located in the Edava village and is the apt location for tourists who are fond of lush green vegetation and lagoons. Tourists can visit the beach during the monsoon season. Anjengo Fort

Located at a distance of 12 km from Varkala at Anjengo, the specialty of this fort is that it was built in 17th century. The National Heritage monuments take care of this fort.

Ponnumthuruthu

This is more famous as Golden Island and situated 20 km from Varkala. The main attraction of this island is the 100 year old Shiva Parvathi temple. Tourists can take a 30 minute backwater ride to Ponnumthuruthu from Nedunganda.
