Places of Interest in Madurai


There are a number of places of interest in Madurai, India. Tourists from different parts of India visit Madurai throughout the year. Some of the well-known tourist attractions of Madurai are Mariamman Teppakulam, Thirupparankundram Temple, Thirumalai Nayak Palace and Sri Meenakshi Temple.

The Mariamman Teppakulam is one of the most well known places of interest of Madurai. It is a big temple tank. The tank is located near the Meenakshi temple. It is the biggest temple tank of Tamil Nadu. The Mariamman Teppakulam is dedicated to Vigneshwara or Vinayaka. According to popular belief, Tirumala Nayaka has created the Mariamman Teppakulam. The idol of Vigneshwara is located in the central part of the mandapan.

The Thirupparankundram Temple is one of the most renowned tourist attractions at Madurai. The Thirupparankundram Temple is situated at a distance of around 8 km towards the south of the Madurai railway junction. It was established by the Pandyas in the 8th century. It is often considered as one of the abodes of the Hindu God Subramanya. Many images of Hindu deities are carved on the walls of the temple. The temple has a shrine dedicated to goddess Durga.

The Thirumalai Nayak Palace is one of the reputed tourist destinations in Madurai. It was erected in the seventeenth century by a king called Thirumalai Nayak. It consists of two parts called Rangavilasa and Swargavilasa. Currently, only the courtyard, Swargavilasa, along with a few surrounding structures can be viewed by the tourists.

The Sri Meenakshi Temple is one of the most leading places of interest at Madurai. The dual shrines of the temple are dedicated to Lord Sundareshvara, i. e., Shiva and Meenakshi.
