Approximately 501.83 million tonnes of gold ore (primary) have been estimated by the National Mineral Inventory in the nation. Out of which, 17.22 million tonnes of gold ore have been classified as reserves while 484.61 million tonnes have been classified as remaining resources.

State reserve, from highest to lowest:

  • Bihar
  • Rajasthan
  • Karnataka
  • West Bengal
  • Andhra Pradesh
  • Jharkhand

The rest of the ore resources are spread over Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. The cost of extracting any resource, including gold, varies per mining.

Let's talk about major Gold Mines in India:

Hatti Gold Mines:

Location: Raichur District, Karnataka

  • This is perhaps one of the world's oldest metal mines, going back to the Pre-Ashokan time, with ancient miners working down to a depth of almost 2300 feet.
  • They most likely shattered the boulder by "fire-setting," or heating it with flames and then quickly cooling it by pouring water onto the hot rock, causing chunks to fall off.
  • According to carbon dating performed by Dr Rafter of Australia in 1955, the age of the two samples of lumber discovered in old workings was believed to be around 2000 years old.

Kolar Gold Mines:

Location: Kolar District, Karnataka

  • It is a gold mine located in the Kolar district of Karnataka, India. Its headquarters are in Robertsonpet, where workers and their families of Bharat Gold Mines Limited (BGML) and BEML Limited (previously Bharat Earth Movers Limited) dwell.
  • K.G.F. is around 30 kilometres from Kolar and 100 kilometres from Bengaluru, the state capital of Karnataka.
  • For almost a century, the town has been known for its gold mining activities. Despite the presence of gold, the operation was closed on February 28, 2001, due to a decline in gold prices.
