What are metallic minerals?
Metallic minerals are naturally occurring substances that contain one or a cluster of metallic mineral elements in their raw form. They are solid in nature and lustrous in colour. Metallic minerals are generally found in igneous and metamorphic rocks. They are also good conductors of electricity and heat.
Mentioned below are Metallic minerals found in India
1. Iron ore
Iron ore is the raw form of iron that is used to make crude iron. Later, the crude iron gets mixed into the steel, which makes it more stronger. Iron ores are rich in iron oxides, which changes the colour of the iron ore from dark grey to yellow. Sometimes, from dark purple to rusty red.
There are four types of iron ore in India, based on colour, quality, quantity, and region of growth. These types are haematite, magnetite, limonite, and Siderite.
2. Copper
Copper is a chemical element. It is a good conductor of electricity. Copper is reddish-brown in colour. It is used for domestic purposes as well as for commercial purposes. India is not very rich in the availability of copper as compared to other resources. There are only some of the states that consist of mines and deposits. These states are Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Jharkhand.
3. Bauxite
India is rich in bauxite reserves. Bauxite is used as a primary ingredient in making aluminum. Aluminum consists of 80% bauxite. It is typically found in areas near laterite rocks. Laterite rocks are commonly found in the peninsular and coastal regions. That is, plateaus and hill ranges.
Bauxite ore is mainly found in the peninsular, coastal and hill ranges, such as Odisha, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh etc.
4. Manganese
Manganese is one of the most important elements for making iron and steel in India. Indian states that produce manganese on a large scale are Maharashtra, Odisha, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh etc.
Other metallic minerals found in India are gold, aluminium, zinc, silver, nickel, platinum, tungsten, tin etc.
