About Bijapur



There are a number of interesting historical facts about Bijapur. It is located 530 km. to the northwest of Bangalore. The city has a long and glorious history, this ancient town of Bijapur was the capital of the Adil Shahi dynasty. The major languages spoken in the city are Kannada and English.

Bijapur lies very close to Belgaum, which is said to be the entrance to Karnataka from Goa and Mumbai. Bijapur can be accessed very easily as it is well-linked by road and rail to Bangalore, Belgaum and Goa. The nearest airport of the city is Belgaum that is located at a distance of 205 km. Some of the other local means of conveyance are auto-rickshaws, buses and tongas.

As a tourist destination, Bijapur is very famous especially for its magnificent monuments. Some of the places of interest in and around Bijapur are Gol Gumbaz, Jumma Masjid, Malik-e-Maidan, Rock cut Vishnu Temple at Badami, Bhutanatha Temples, Buddhist Temple at Aihole and many more. The ideal time to visit the city is during the winter season, between September and February.
