A Career In Bio-Technology Engineering

What is bio-technology engineering?

Biotechnology engineering is an engineering program that involves the study of technology combined with biology for the purpose of research and development. The engineers in this field can find solutions relating to fields like structural genomics, functional genomics and proteomics. The application of this field is quite wide, which is why it is used in the industrial sector like food, beverages, textiles, medicines and pharmaceuticals and in the field of agriculture, nutrition, animal husbandry and environmental conservation. In short it covers every field.

How to be a bio-technology engineer?

Candidates can pursue a B.Sc. or B.E. or B.Tech. in biotechnology in the country. The duration of B.Sc. degree is three years and that of engineering is 4 years.

Eligibility criteria

The eligibility for candidates to earn a degree is to first pass 10+2 with 50% marks in subjects like biology, chemistry, physics and math. There are some institutions where biology is compulsory, whereas some accept only PCM subjects as combination. With such combinations in the 12th, one can easily opt for B.Sc. But for a degree in engineering, candidate has to appear for common entrance exams like IIT JEE or entrance exam of other institutions.

Academic program

To be an engineer in biotechnology, one has to complete eight semesters that cover various topics. Some of the subjects are engineering, math, microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, process biotechnology, plant and animal biotechnology, immunology, bioinformatics, and many others. One can also do specialization in various areas like development production, administration, quality control, etc. You can go on to complete graduation or masters in biotechnology. Specializations are carried out in fields like environmental protection, fishery, biochemistry, botany, horticulture, pharmacology, nutrition, microbiology, molecular biology, and many more.

Institutions in India

There are many renowned institutions that help you earn a degree in biotechnology. You can earn either a B.Sc. or engineering degree, which is why there will be plenty of options open to you. Among top colleges that offer bio-technology courses are the IITs (Kanpur, Roorkee and Guwahati); NIT Warnagal; NSIT Delhi; Thapar University; Manipal Institute of Technology, Karnataka; Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT); and Sir M. Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology.

Scope and career

A biotechnologist can work in fields like animal husbandry, agriculture, medicine, genetic engineering, environment conservation, health care, and research & development in various fields. Further those in the specialization can easily find job facilitates in government as well as private sectors. Teaching in various institutions is also an attractive option for those doing a post graduation degree.
There are various industries that are engaged in developing and researching biological products and chemical industries. In India, the demand is quite steady as the country is fundamentally agrarian and need experts who can help in the growth of agriculture produce. Besides, there is always demand for improvements in medicines and health products. Students in the research field tend to take up projects overseas, which is another lucrative option.

Some of the well known companies who hire biotechnologists are: Thapar Group, Hindustan Antibiotics, Hindustan Lever, Cadila, Indo American Hybrid seeds, Indian Vaccines Corporation, Sun Pharma, etc.

The average salary of a biotechnologist is around Rs. 3 lakh to Rs. 5 lakh per annum. If you have earned a post-graduation degree, then your salary will be much more. Besides, experience and the right organization will also give you more salary.
