The Indian Institutes of Managements (IIMs) are the autonomous institutes of management education and research in India. There are a total of 13 IIMs in India that offer postgraduate, doctoral and executive education programmes. The first IIM was established on an initiative taken by the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, on the recommendation of the Planning Commission. All the IIMs are registered under the Indian Societies Registration Act as separate societies. Each IIM is an autonomous body and has independent control over its administration; however, the overall strategy and operations are supervised by the IIM Council headed by the Minister of Human Resource of India.

Admission Process

The admission process varies for different programmes in IIMs.
  • For a two-year PGP programme, the admissions of Indian candidates are based on the scores of the Common Admission Test (CAT). CAT is an aptitude test conducted by the IIMs as an evaluation tool for the admissions to this programme. However, international and overseas candidates can apply for admission by using their GMAT scores.
  • For admission to a doctoral programme, some IIMs seek the candidates to prepare a presentation on their research idea or take up a 'Research Aptitude Test'.
  • Admission to some programmes also includes essays and academic and/or recommendations from professionals.
  • The final round of the selection process includes an interview and before that, some IIMs also conduct some other evaluation tests like written assessments tests and group discussions.

Fees

The fee structures of IIMs vary according to different programmes and different campuses. The IIMs also provide hostel facilities to their students besides other facilities.
