Malpua Recipe for Janmashtami Special


Janmashtami, also known as Krishna Janmashtami, is a Hindu festival. It is the celebration of Lord Krishna’s birthday. It is celebrated in a grand way around the world in almost every Hindu household and temple; people from other communities also join in to enjoy the festival. Lord Krishna is served with various sweets and other dishes, especially dairy sweets and butter, as he loved them. Hindus belonging to different countries celebrate it in different ways. With Janmashtami around, Bengalis serve the recipe “Malpua”, a must for Janmashtami Bhog (devotional offering made to god). It is a pancake-like sweet dish made with its star ingredient, Sooji (Semolina flour). Malpuas are made with very minimal ingredients. Below is the complete recipe for it.


  • Semolina flour- 1 cup
  • Sugar- ½ cup
  • Water- As needed
  • All-purpose flour- ½ cup
  • Fennel seeds- 1 tsp.
  • Ghee- 3 to 4 tbsp.
  • Vegetable oil- For frying


To make the batter

  1. Take a large bowl and in it, add the semolina flour along with all-purpose flour.
  2. Gradually add water to it, and mix it with a spatula or large spoon. The consistency of the batter should be thick but enough to be pouring consistently.
  3. Now gradually add sugar as per the sweetness you desire, and add the fennel seeds. Mix them all well.

For frying

  1. Take a pan and put it on the stove in medium flame.
  2. After the pan heats up, add one tablespoon of ghee and some vegetable oil.
  3. Take one scoop of the batter and pour it into the pan. The size can be as per your desire.
  4. Fry one side until golden brown.
  5. Flip it on the other side and fry it till golden brown.
  6. When both sides become light brown, take off the pan. It is ready to serve.

*The Malpuas can be served with sugar syrup or chopped dry fruits.
