In the mood for some Jhal Muri?

Jhal Muri or the spicy puffed rice is one street food which you can have without the guilt pangs of how many calories you are consuming in the process. Masala Muri or the Jhal Muri as it is known in Bengal is one food which anyone can make it if of course you need the imagination and the taste to make it better each time. Try it at home or eat it while you are there in the park or simply anywhere. The Khomchawala will be happy to serve you and let you taste it first so that you can provide the valuable inputs before the final preparation.

As I stay in Kolkata, Jhal Muri is part of my diet so to say. I would admit here that mostly I have it outside but when am in the mood to explore something then out comes the preparation of Jhal Muri. Doesn’t take much time and mostly you will find all the ingredients in the kitchen. So here is the recipe:

 

Ingredients:

  • Puffed Rice
  • Achaar or pickle oil
  • Green chillies
  • Boiled potatoes cut in very small pieces
  • Coconut cut in thin slices
  • Sev or Bhujia
  • Tomatoes
  • Cucumber
  • Peanuts or Badaam
  • Roasted masala powder
  • Red chilli powder (optional)
  • Salt to taste
  • Tamarind water
  • Lemon
  • Coriander leaves
  • Onions shredded

Jhal Muri Recipe

If you have a cylindrical utensil then use that for the preparation, the ones in which milk is carried. First add all the ingredients except puffed rice, sev, coriander leaves, lemon and tamarind water. Mix using a long handle spoon in a circular manner. This is the reason cylindrical vessel is best for the preparation. Now add puffed rice, a little more of the oil and mix again. When the masala coats the puffed rice and other ingredients are properly mixed add the lemon juice and tamarind water. Now pour the Jhal Muri in bowls where you will serve. Garnish with sev, coriander leaves. Jhal Muri is ready to be enjoyed. Goes well with a hot cup of tea.
