Spread across an area of 43 acres, it has a long history of 257 years. It was built in 1760 by Gujar Singh Bhangi. At that time, it came to be known as ‘Bhagian da Qila’. In the 19th century, Maharaja Ranjit Singh took over this fort and renamed it the ‘Gobindgarh Fort.

Located in the heart of Amritsar, the Gobindgarh Fort is a famous monument in Punjab. Spread across an area of 43 acres, it has a long history of 257 years. It was built in 1760 by Gujar Singh Bhangi. At that time, it came to be known as ‘Bhagian da Qila’. In the 19th century, Maharaja Ranjit Singh took over this fort and renamed it the ‘Gobindgarh Fort. 

In 1849, Britishers captured this fort after Second Anglo-Sikh War. Thein from 1947, the Indian army looked after this fort. The Government of India gave it to the state government in 2006. Some years down the line, it was opened for the public to experience the fort’s rich history.

  • Sher E Punjab

Sher E Punjab is a popular show on Maharaja Ranjit Singh. It is directed by famous film director Ketan Mehta. The show takes you back to the 19th century, in the era of Maharaj Ranjit Singh. It is a 7D show which makes it worth watching. The show can be watched from 10.00 am to 08.45 pm.

  • Kandha Boldiyan Ne (Whispering Walls)

Kandha Boldiyan Ne is a light and sound show that tells Gobindgarh’s story. It uses laser lights, computer animation and projection mapping technologies using a 20,000 lumens projector and 7.1 surround sound. It is available in both Punjabi and English language. The Punjabi-language show starts at 08.15 pm, and the English-language show begins at 08.45 pm.

  • Toshakhana

Toshakhana is the place where the Kohinoor was housed. At present, you can find its replica here. It is one of the reasons for the popularity of the Gobindgarh Fort. It remains open from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm from Tuesday to Sunday. On Monday and Government holidays, it remains closed.

  • Pagdi Museum (Turban Museum)

The Turban Museum is housed inside the NE Bastion’s Gobindgarh Art Gallery. It exhibits a variety of turbans worn in Punjab by Sikhs and Non-Sikhs and by the NRIs. The information board here tells the story of their evolution over the years. It remains open from 10.00 am to 7.00 pm. 

  • Warfare Museum

As the name suggests, the Warfare Museum is home to rare instruments used in wars and replicas of swords and the war attire of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. It also exhibits 14.3 ft. Bhangian di Tope is also known as the Zamzama. The museum remains open from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm except for Mondays and Government holidays.

Apart from these, you can see the paintings of famous Saints and Warriors of Punjab at the NE Bastion’s Gobindgarh Art Gallery. Enjoy live folk and cultural performances, participate in fun activities, enjoy the horse ride also or can take the History Ride in a specially designed EMV inside the fort.
