The Lens Of India: A History Of Photography In The Subcontinent

The collective process of capturing electromagnetic radiation to create enduring images is known as Photography. This is done chemically using a light-sensitive material, like photographic film, or electronically using an image sensor. Photography is derived from the Greek words photos – for “light” and graphos for “drawing”.

India has a long and rich history of Photography, beginning in the 19th century when British photographers began documenting the country’s people, traditions, and landscapes. In the second half of the 19th century, Indian photographers emerged. They focused on various subjects, including societal issues, religious rites, and daily life. This contentious colonial prism created a more complex and comprehensive view of India. Indian photographers developed their craft in the 20th century, documenting the country’s struggles and triumphs through reportage and experimenting with new media like conceptual and abstract Photography.

Camera and its mechanism

In Photography, a camera is a device used to capture an image on a light-sensitive surface. It is a light-tight box with an aperture for permitting light that is focused onto a sensitized plate or film.

Parts of the Camera:

1. Lens: It is the foremost important camera part, responsible for collecting the reflected light from its surroundings.

2. Aperture: An aperture is the opening in the front, allowing control of the amount of light entering the camera body.

3. Pentaprism: It is a glass placed at a 45-degree angle behind the camera lens. It helps the light rays change their direction to reach the image sensor.

4. Image sensor: It is a sensor that detects and conveys the information used to form an image. After projecting on the sensor, the light waves convert into light signals.

5. Viewfinder: A rectangular opening on the back side of the camera lets us see the subject’s frame that needs to be photographed.

6. LCD Display: The display allows us to see the image and to set different parameters and modes.

7. Shutter –  It controls the time the image sensor is exposed to the light.
