The Portal for First-Year Junior College (FYJC) admissions in Maharashtra will be shut down for repairs on Wednesday, 21 June, 2017, for maintenance purposes following repeated crashing of the server over the weekend. Maharashtra education department plans to shut down the site to perform the required repair works of the site. The Application deadline for admissions for the FYJC is expected to be extended to June 30 from the scheduled date of June 27, 2017.

Education Minister Vinod Tawde has issued a statement saying “The website will be shut on Wednesday to fix the problems. Even if this delays the admissions by a day, parents and students should not panic.”

Lakhs of students have been accessing the portal to fill up their college application forms for admission purposes since Saturday evening after the Maharashtra Board declared Secondary School Certificate (SSC) class 10th results on Tuesday.

The FYJC admission is the most anticipated event of the academic calendar in Maharashtra. This year more than 2.5 lakh students are vying for seats in the different colleges of the state. Maharashtra Education Department centralised admissions for the first time and made the process online across the state. Earlier, admissions only in major cities such as Mumbai and Pune were done online. However, the portal has not been able to take the load of the number of students accessing it and thus slowed down and crashed time and again due to an overload of usage.

30,000 students who have cleared the SSC have not been able to apple for admission because of the server issues. Only 67, 289 of the 2 lakh students ( Accounting for only one in three students) who have applied have been able to complete the applications. Even though the Education Department added two more servers to the existing seven on receiving complaints of the server crashing, it did not improve the performance of the portal.

The servers have been added by Nysa Asia who are handling the process for the first time and thus unaware of the traffic to this portal.

The problems related to the non-functioning of the FYJC portal is further multiplied as Colleges which are supposed to conduct a ‘zero round ‘ for admissions to in-house, minority, and management quotas from June 16 to June 30, are unable to do so because they are also waiting for the website to work properly.

The merit list for Christian minority students of St Xavier’s College, Fort, will be announced today, on 21 June, 2017, while HR College will announce theirs on June 23, 2017.

The Education Minister has also promised that students who have not been able to upload cultural or sports quota marks would not lose the extra points normally allotted to them.
