Starring: Shahid Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha, Sonu Sood
Directed by: Prabhu Deva
Music: Pritam
When bollywood has nothing new to offer, it goes back to the older times trying to re-invent what has been already seen a hundred times. Evidently, Prabhudeva’s films always have the three basic elements- A road-side romeo with astounding strength, an equally powerful villain and a first-angry-later-submissive heroine. We have seen this in Wanted, Rowdy Rathore and Ramaiya Vastavaiya and we see this yet again in Prabhudeva’s next R…Rajkumar. R…Rajkumar is a nothing new but a typical masala entertainer with ample fights, ample dance and ample humor.
Plot: Rajkumar works for one of the opium growing gangs of the Dhartipur Village. He is extremely loyal and efficient until the master and the servant, both, fall for the same girl. And the fight begins!
Performances: Ten years in the industry, Shahid Kapoor has been trying very hard to find an entry into the list of the successful actors of bollywood. Perhaps, it is the kind of films he gets to do or sheer luck that has been unfavorable for him. In spite of being one of the best actors and dancers in bollywood, his career has been almost stagnant. In Rajkumar, he yet again delivers a power-packed performance. He is robust in action sequences and hilarious when it comes to doing comedy. I really wish the actor gets his share of success after working so hard in every film.
Just like Sonakshi Sinha’s roles, it would be better if I just copy-paste my views about her performance. How and why is this talented actress wasting herself by doing the same thing over and over again? If not her roles, the least she can do is to change the way she looks in every film. I wonder what is stopping her from losing some weight!
Sonu Sood is nothing exceptional this time. The wickedness that was seen as Chhedi Singh is missing this time.
Music: With Pritam as the composer, the songs are expected to be chartbusters. The music of R…Rajkumar does not disappoint. The album has a couple of foot-tapping numbers which have been topping the charts everywhere.
What’s good: The film is good as a masala entertainer with some energetic dance numbers and bone-tickling humor. The music is absolutely foot-tapping and likeable.
What’s bad: The plot is very typical and over-used. Some of the action sequences are vague and unrealistic.
R…Rajkumar is an ordinary film, much below Prabhudeva’s caliber. But, in spite of all the flaws and shortcomings, the film does one good thing- it entertains! This is what makes R…Rajkumar watchable!
Verdict: Watch R…Rajkumar for Shahid Kapoor’s unswerving effort!
Rating: ** and a 1/2
