Raksha Bandhan is a Hindi comedy-drama film about an Indian family. The film shows the story of the eldest brother, Lala Kedarnath, and her four sisters, Gayatri, Durga, Laxmi, and Saraswati. He promises her ill mother on her deathbed that he will marry only after he marries off her four sisters.
The plot revolves around the hurdles Lala Kedarnath faces while finding suitable grooms for her sisters. Moreover, he could not find grooms for his sisters due to Laxmi’s dark complexion, Durga’s fatness, and the masculine behaviour of Saraswati. The film also shows his childhood friend Sapna, whom Lala wants to marry.
The film is all about the story of two houses. Lala’s struggle to find suitable grooms for his sisters and Sapna’s perseverance to marry Lala against her father’s will.
Cast and Crew
Akshay Kumar plays the protagonist in the film as Lala Kedarnath. BhumiPednekar has played the role of Sapna. Sadia Khateeb is Gayatri, Deepika Khanna as Durga, Smriti Srikanth as Laxmi and Sahejmeen Kaur as Saraswati.
The film is directed by Aanand L. Rai and written by Himanshu Sharma and Kanika Dhillon. This film has four producers: Zee Studios, director Aanand L. Rai, Writer Himanshu Sharma and Sister of Akshay Kumar Alka Hiranandani.
Plot
Akshay Kumar represented as the eldest brother of four sisters. He owns a chaat-paapdi shop. His shop was famous for Golgappas. A myth is followed that any pregnant woman who eats Lala’s Golgappas gives birth to a baby boy. He earns his bread and butter through his eatery shop.
His mother, on her deathbed, forced him to promise that he would get married only after she tied the knot of her sisters in a suitable house. Lala finds it challenging to find grooms for her sisters, as his sister Laxmi has a dark complexion, Durga’s fatness and the masculine behaviour of Saraswati.
On the other hand, Lala was keen on marrying his childhood friend Sapna. Sapna was also ready to marry Lala. Keeping the vow with Lala’s mother, she decides to wait until his sister’s marriage. Sapna’s father forces him to marry soon.
Gayatri’s marriage carries a turning point in the plot. The in-laws of Gayatri agree to marry her with an 18 lakh dowry. Lala manages to gather the dowry money for Gayatri. Due to dowry, Lala’s first sister, Gayatri, gets married. The story throws light on the dowry system, as Gayatri commits suicide due to the demand for more dowry.
Gayatri did not want to stress Lala more as he was already collecting money after selling his kidney. After Gayatri’s suicide due to dowry, Lala decides to encourage his three sisters to be more capable. He suggests that his three sisters be successful in choosing their groom.
At the end of the story, he finds that he was adopted. The reality is revealed that he is not the real brother of the four sisters. On the other hand, Lala breaks all relations with Sapna and forces her to marry the boy of her father’s choice. Sapna gets convinced to marry the other boy. After Sapna’s marriage, his father discovers she is not happy and wants to marry Lala.
Sapna breaks the marriage and waits for Lala. The boy with whom Sapna was getting married was married to Laxmi, sister of Lala. In 12 years, Durga became a graduate and a lawyer. She fights for the justice of her dead sister Gayatri. The court sentenced their husband of Gayatri to life imprisonment.
Durga marries her classmate. Saraswati, a tomboy, becomes a police officer and ties the knot with her colleague. All the three sisters of Lala marry by their own choice. Ultimately, Lala marries her childhood friend, Sapna, at 60.
Songs
The film consists of 10 songs. Different singers sing all ten songs: Nihal Tauro, Arijit Singh, Shreya Ghoshal, Himesh Reshammiya, and the Nooran sisters.
