3. Zubeidaa (2001)
Shyam Benegal directed Zubeidaa, which was based on the real life story of the ill-fated actress Zubeida Begum. She went on to marry Hanwant Singh of Jodhpur. The original story was written by the son of Zubeida Begum, Khalid Mohammed (also the film’s screenplay writer). The role of the protagonist was played by Karisma Kapoor and the star cast of the movie included Rekha, Manoj Bajpayee, and others. “Zubeidaa” went on to win National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. Karisma Kapoor won the Filmfare Critics’ Award for Best Actress.
