Voting for the second phase of the five-phase assembly election ended by and large peacefully in Jharkhand. Polling for the 20 out of 81 constituencies was held in two different timings. As per the report released by the Election Commission, voting at Jamshedpur (East) and Jamshedpur (West) constituencies commenced between 7 am to 5 pm, while the rest of the 18 constituencies voters exercised their franchise from 7 am to 3 pm. The first phase of election was held on last Saturday.

Sisai records 68.6 % voting

Overall, 59.27 per cent polling was recorded as voting ended in 18 out of 20 constituencies at 3 pm. The highest turnout was recorded in Sisai 68.6 per cent, while voting in Jamshedpur East and West will end at 5 pm. The third phase of polling will take place on 12 December.

Tight security

A huge security personnel was deployed to hold peaceful, impartial and transparent polling. As per the police report, more than 42,000 security men were on the election duty in the 20 seats spread across seven districts in the state. Apart from this, a total of 6,066 polling booths had been set up for smooth voting.

260 candidates in poll fray

Overall 260 candidates are trying their electoral luck in the second phase. Among them, 29 candidates are women and 73 are contesting elections as independent candidates. But some of the notable faces whose electoral fate hang in balance are the state’s Chief Minister Raghubar Das, Speaker Dinesh Oraon and ministers Neelkanth Singh Munda and Ramchandra Sahis. Today’s election will also decide the fate of BJP state unit president Laxman Gilua.

Do or die situation

The political parties are not ready to give even a single inch to their nemesis. A fierce battle is obvious in the state to grab power in the 81 seats of the Jharkhand assembly. The ruling party would like to wipe out the poor performance of Maharashtra and Haryana. The opposition is looking to grab the golden opportunity to deprive the BJP of coming to power second time consecutively in Jharkhand.

Effect on Delhi polls

The result will put lots of sense in the upcoming polls in Delhi assembly next year. Preparation for the Delhi polls in advance is underway. Politicians are gearing up and mudslinging on each other has already begun. The BJP is looking serious to improve its record in the state assembly polls. Battle on 20 seats

In the second phase of polls, the BJP and the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) are fighting for all 20 seats. Meanwhile, opposition alliance JMM and Congress are in the poll fray in 14 and six seats respectively, while another alliance RJD has not fielded any candidate in the second phase.

CM takes on old friend

Chief Minister Raghubar Das has been contesting against his former cabinet colleague Saryu Roy in Jamshedpur (East), Saryu is fighting as an independent candidate. Pradeep Kumar Balmachu, former Jharkhand PCC president who recently turned coat joined AJSU is trying his luck from Ghatshila. JD(U) president Salkhan Murmu and former HRD minister Bandhu Tirkey are contesting from Majhgaon and Mandar respectively.

PM tweets for voters

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, tweeted early in the morning and appealed the voters to come out from their houses in large numbers and exercise their franchise. “Today is the second phase of voting in Jharkhand Assembly elections. I urge all voters to come out in maximum numbers and make this democracy successful”.

One person dies in clash

Voting in the second phase saw severe battle and several untoward incidents also took place despite high alert and tight security. The clash between the two rival groups in Gumla has forced the officials to postpone the voting in booth no. 36 in Sisai constituency. Security personnel tried their best to calm down the people and asked them to maintain peace in the area. As per the report, one person had been killed and several people were injured in police firing.

A tragedy occurred in East Singhbhum during the election when a police officer Harish Chandra Giri, died of a heart attack while doing his duty in the second phase of the election.
