Term – August 24, 1974 to February 11, 1977
Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed had served as a minister before being elected as the President of India. His term was possibly the most controversial since this was when a state of emergency had been declared across the country. Elections and other civil freedoms including the freedom of the press were curbed at this time and Prime Minister Indira Gandhi assumed unchecked authority. He was the second Muslim President of India and also the second Indian President to die in office.
