Varanasi: A Visit To India’s Spiritual City

Banaras is one of those chaotic places that give you peace even when surrounded by people. This shrine of Lord Shiva brings hope and happiness to your life. It’s not only about the devotion of people which attracts them to Banaras; it is also about the culture, environment, people, stories, historical places and food. Banaras is visited by many but is loved by all. It is a place of heritage and great historical epics which is growing and developing each day.

The road taking you to the Ganga Ghat is crowded with people. Attracting them are the street vendors and shops on both sides of the road. Handmade products, Banarasi sarees, ornaments and whatnot. The smell of fresh sweets made of pure milk, the one that can’t be found anywhere else- ras malai, rabadi, hot Gulab Jamun- watering your mouth every time you think or even hear about them. The only thought you would have is- what to eat and what not to miss.

Reaching the Ghats, you will find the Ganga River and its calmness. The cold water, when touched, reaches your soul. The Ganges River is said to wash away all sins with its purity, but it is not water but an environment that fills you with positive energy. This place gives you hope and encourages you to step towards a great life, leaving behind all your wrong deeds and mistakes.

When the sun sets, the crowd near the ghat increases. It’s the time for which people wait for hours- The Ganga Aarti. Seven young saints wear silk clothes to do the aarti at the Dasashwamedh Ghat. Thousands of people wait to watch the spectacular way of worshipping Ganga, called Ganga Maa. The sound of prayers chanted by the saints and the pleasant smell of the incense sticks, flowers, dhoop, and pure ghee used for the aarti fills the air. The view of the ritual is so mesmerizing that it creates an image in your heart. There is nothing else left with you except the light of positivity.

People’s devotion initiates with the name of Kashi Vishwanath Temple, and then there is no end to it. This temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of India, situated on the bank of the Ganga. Devotees stand in long queues for hours, crossing lanes connecting them to the temple. Just for the moment, they will be able to worship their lord. Shouting the name of Lord Shiva- Jai Shivshankar or Bholenath ki Jai- there remains a sign of happiness and delight in the face of people. Every step closer to the temple increases the excitement.
It’s not only the hold of Hinduism that attracts people, but Buddhism has its history near Varanasi. 12 kilometres away from Varanasi is a village called Sarnath, where you will find the Dhamek Stupa. It is considered that Buddha came to this place to give his first sermon, which revealed the eightfold path after he achieved enlightenment.

A spiritual walk on the streets of Banaras connects you to Indian traditions and values. The Ghats built by Hindu and Mughal emperors have huge importance and many stories attached. It is even said that one who is cremated in Varanasi attains enlightenment. This place will open new surprises for you when you visit. Astonishing beauty, culture, tradition and, of course, the people of Banaras represent this profound place.
