The city of Porbandar derives its name from the two words, Porai and Bandar, referring to the harbor of the local Goddess Porai. The city has a long history that dates back to the mythological ages. According to legends, the city was earlier known as Sudamapuri, named after the fellow companion of Lord Krishna.
Porbandar is situated on the west coast of India and experiences a maritime climate throughout the year. The best time to visit Porbandar is between the months of October and February when the temperatures remain pleasant.
In ancient times, Porbandar had emerged as a flourishing trade center, having established trade links with the Gulf and Africa. The vestiges of the ancient city are retained by the Siddis, who inhabit the city of Porbandar. The friendly and hospitable people of Porbandar converse and communicate in Gujarati and Hindi. English is also widely spoken in Porbandar.
Porbandar city is well connected by air and rail routes to the other cities of the country. Jet Airways plies regular flights from Mumbai to Porbandar. The Saurashtra Express train also plies from Mumbai to Porbandar via Ahmadabad and Rajkot. Buses ply within the city, transporting tourists to the various destinations. Regular buses are also available from Dwarka, Veraval and Junagadh to Porbandar.
