The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary will be a delight for the bird watcher and the tourist alike. This 14 - acre Bird Sanctuary is located on the eastern banks of the Vembanad Lake. The common dwellers here are the waterfowl, ducks, cuckoos and wild ducks. If you are lucky you will chance upon a Siberian Crane, a special visitor during the migratory season.

By Train

The nearest airport from Kumarakom is the Cochin International Airport, which is 70 kms from Kumarakom. The Thiruvanathapuram(Trivandrum) International Airport is 171 kms from Kumarakom.

By Rail

Kottayam is the nearest railway station. There are regular local and express trains, which connect Kumarakom with major cities in India.

By Road

Kottayam, the main road junction is just 14 kms from Kumarakom. Kumarakom is also well linked with all the major cities in India through the State and National Highways.

Shopping in Kumarakom

Kumarakom is an ideal getaway for a nature lover. Therefore it is not an ideal shopping destination. However you can pick up souvenirs from the shops in the small town.

In Kumarakom, you will find handcrafted gift items typical of the state of Kerala. They include things made form coconut shells ranging from lampshades to fashion accessory like earrings, brass lamps, kathakali masks and so on.

If you want to indulge in an extensive shopping, then a stopover at Cochin, about 70 kms from Kumarakom will be ideal.

Best time to Visit

The presence of the water beside the land allows a moderate climate for Kumarakom. Summers are marked by high temperatures of 37 degree centigrade. However there is a presence of a cool breeze during summers. The winter temperatures are marked by temperatures like 16 degree centigrade. There are heavy showers during the monsoon months of June to September.
