Srimati Vasundhara Raje succeeded Mr. Ashok Gehlot to the position of the Chief Minister of Rajasthan on 8th of December 2003. Revered as the first woman to man the cogent portfolio of the Chief Minister, Ms Raje’s commitment is scripting new success stories for the colorful Rajasthan.
Ms. Raje was born into the royal family of Gwalior, in Mumbai, on 8th of March in the year 1953. Daughter of Rajmata Vijaya Raje and His Highness Jivaji Rao Scindia, she went to Presentation Convent, located in Kodaikanal. A product of the illustrious Sophia College of Mumbai, political science and economics were her forte. Her alliance with Raja Hemant Singh of Dholpur, brought her closer to the ravishing Rajasthan.
An avid social worker, with a keen interest in politics, Raje’s initiation in to the Bhartiya Janata Party’s National Working Committee in 1984, ushered a successful political career. She held the prestigious position of the Vice President of the state level BJP Yuva Morcha from 1984 to 1986. The voice of Dholpur in the state legislative assembly between 1985 and 1989, Srimati Raje was elected to the office of the vice-president of Bharatiya Janata Party’s state level outfit in 1987 and manned the portfolio till 1989. The ticket from Jhalawar, proved to be her claim to fame as she emerged victorious from this seat in 1989, 1991, 1996, 1998 and 1999. She was laurelled the Joint Secretary of BJP Parliamentary Committee of Bharatiya Janata Party in 1997. Besides, she has also been an indispensable part of the ministries of Commerce and Tourism, Science and Technology and Power.
The all important office of the State External Affairs Ministry in 1998- 1999 and the crucial portfolio of minister of state, in the Central Government, with autonomous jurisprudence with respect to department of Nuclear Energy, small scale industries, department dealing in Pension and Pensioners’ benefit schemes, the department of research and development of space technology among a host of others.
Ms Raje ascended to the position of the President of the Bhartiya Janata Party’s Rajasthan outfit in the year 2002 and undertook the Parivartan Yatra, to gain a thorough knowledge of what is plaguing her state and mull over effective ameliorative measures. The prestigious office of head of the Bhraratiya Janata Party’s Rajasthan’s outfit, to which she was elected on 6th of December 2003, is one of the highlights of her career, followed by her election to the office of the Chief Minister.
Her political repertoire has been further enriched by extensive traveling across Japan, England, Bangladesh, China, Nepal Morocco, Egypt, Sri Lanka, South Korea, South Africa among others.
