Schools, being the place of basic education, are given high importance in the country of India. Apart from imparting classroom education, many of these schools in India aim at the overall development of a child. This makes them provide options for different kinds of extra-curricular activities.

Nowadays, apart from the Government schools in India, many private schools have emerged, which have got significant contribution to the educational development of the society at large. With the improvement in the educational system, many of the country's schools are now equipped with well stocked libraries, vast play grounds, computer rooms, indoor games' room, swimming pools etc. Some of the schools even provide mid-day meals to their students.

Types of Schools in India



All the schools of the country can be broadly categorized into the following types:
  • Pre-primary Schools
  • Primary Schools
  • Secondary Schools
  • Higher Secondary Schools
Besides being run by Government or private owners, most of these schools, especially the secondary and higher secondary ones are again sub-divided into some sub-categories based on the syllabus followed in those schools. Any such Indian school can follow the curriculum specified by either of the following boards of education in India:
  • Government education board of the respective states
  • Central Board of Secondary Education (C. B. S. E.)
  • Indian Certificate for Secondary Education (I. C. S. E.)
  • National Institute of Open Schooling (N. I. O. S.)
  • International Baccalaureate Program
  • Cambridge International Examinations
  • Madrasah
The prevalence of another kind of school is found in the nation, which is known as boarding or residential schools. These kinds of schools provide accommodation facility to a student while his or her course of study in those schools. Any student taking admission in those schools needs to stay there for studies. Indian schools can even be categorized as the following:
  • Boys' schools: These types of schools are dedicated to boys. No girl students are allowed to enroll themselves in those schools.

  • Girls' schools: As opposed to boys' schools, these schools do not allow the admission of any boy student there.

  • Co-educational schools: These kinds of schools allow both boy and girl students to study together.
