Medical education and practices be it ancient or modern, has existed in Tamil Nadu since a long time. Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani etc has always been the tradition of Tamil Nadu.

Besides this, modern medical science also made its presence long back in the 1930s with the establishment of the first medical institution by the "British East India Company" in the year 1935.

Some of the best medical institutions of India find place in Tamil Nadu. Currently there are more than 20 medical colleges in Tamil Nadu. Most of them have the affiliation of the MGR Medical University. The state also boasts of a university separately, for health science only. 2 medical colleges are also supposed to be established at Tiruvarur and Villupuram. The medical colleges of Tamil Nadu offer several medical programs at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Admission Process

Any candidate, who has qualified higher secondary or equivalent examination with science background, is entitled to apply for studying MBBS or any other equivalent undergraduate medical program. Students aspiring to go for medical education have to seat for a competitive entrance examination at national or state level. Medical schools and colleges in Andhra Pradesh also provide practical training.
